Holograph diary documenting Burr's activities in the Bitterroot River Valley in 1858. The entries contain descriptions of Burr's work with his cattle, hunting and fishing trips, friendships and trade with Nez Percé, Flathead (Salish) and Snake (Shoshoni); and his travels to Fort Benton, Fort Owen, a Catholic mission, Hell Gate Canyon, Salt Lake City, and other areas. Burr also comments on his concern about potential attacks by Mormons, small pox among the Indians, and the activities of fellow settlers Dr. Atkinson, Jake Meeks, Jim [Minesinger?], John Powell and others. Following the diary entries are twelve pages of accounts relating to provisions and cattle. The front endpaper and four pages at the back of the diary contain lists of English words followed by translations into an unidentified Indian language. There are additional miscellaneous notes on the front and back endpapers. The diary was written in a blank printed log entitled Observations of Double Altitudes.

Frederick H. Burr served as engineer under Lieutenant John Mullan on Isaac Stevens's survey expeditions in Montana beginning in 1853. Following a survey expedition with Mullan to Salt Lake City, Burr brought 400 head of cattle and settled in the Bitterroot River Valley area in 1856, married a sister of Granville Stuart's wife Aubony, a Shoshoni, and in later years became sheriff of Deer Lodge County, Montana. Charles Nickolas Kessler was born on 7 July 1874 in Montana to Nickolas Kessler and Louisa Ebert. In 1891 he began working at his father's Montana brewery. He later attended a Chicago school where he was involved in the pioneering of scientific brewing methods. He graduated from the school in 1895 after which he returned to Montana and assumed the presidency of the brewery.
